Chalk Cliffs and Arches of Etretat - Normandy's Best Kept Secret
3/06/2018
Normandy is not only for history buffs and art junkies. Those who admire nature will find some of the most beautiful places in the whole of France located on the coast of Normandy. Yes, I'm talking about those stunning white chalk cliffs and natural arches of Etretat and the endless waters of the English Channel.
Normandy makes a great day trip from Paris. It's even possible to combine visits to Rouen and Honfleur with Etretat in one day like we did, but I'd recommend you slow down and stay overnight if time permits.
There are so many great places to see and things to do in Normandy. For instance, I'd love to visit Mont Saint-Michel known for its castle-like cathedral and dramatic tides, but will do it next time while in the area.
Etretat is a small farming town fueled primarily by tourism.
What draws tourists to the town are the stunning white cliffs and natural arches.
Some of those cliffs are as tall as 90 m / 300 ft and are strikingly similar to those in Southern England.
A rather moderately difficult hike will take you to all three arches: two are seen from the town, and one is hidden behind the southern hill.
As the road wings up to the top of the cliff, you'll pass a German concrete bunker of WWII.
After Allied raids in 1942, the Germans decided to build the Atlantic Wall to make the landing impossible. 1500 mines were buried on the beach, littered with all sorts of obstacles, says the information stand.
A 70 m / 230 ft tall geological feature called "needle" for its sharp form.
I'm sure the scenery in Etretat is beautiful throughout the day, but you won't regret it if you stay till the sunset.
