Take a Rest at Restoule Provincial Park
11/12/2017
Everyone agreed that September was the hottest month in 2017 in Ontario, Canada. The last weekend was particularly cruel - the mercury was predicted to reach +38 C / 100 F with humidex in Toronto. Clearly, that's the kind of weather you don't want to spend in the city, so we decided to head as far north as possible without exhausting ourselves too much with a long drive. Restoule Provincial Park seemed like a good option considering that not many people would drive 4.5 hours from Toronto to get away from the nasty heat.
The park turned out to be a perfect destination for those who want to take a rest from the hustle and bustle of a big city.
The park offers enough activities to keep you busy over the weekend - hiking, biking, canoeing, boating, fishing, swimming, birding and even seasonal hunting.
There are plenty of options when it comes to hiking. My favourite trail was Fire Tower Trail (7 km / 4.3 miles) which offers a stunning view of surrounding forests, lakes and very old mountains called Canadian Shield. They are so old and weathered, they no longer look like mountains.
View of atop the 100 m / 328 ft Stormy Lake Bluffs.
There is a real historic fire tower that was used to identify forest fires before newer technologies - faster and more precise - came into play.
Stormy Lake Bluffs.
Some wildlife.
A wasp hive looked sinister. Wasps became alert when I approached their hive to take a picture.
A colony of some small bugs were moving in the same direction. Mesmerizing, but a bit scary show.
I've never seen so many mushrooms before - with different colours and shapes.
Swimming in Restoule Lake was such a delight after a sweaty hike.
